Origins: The Áo Ngũ Thân
The áo dài traces its roots to the áo ngũ thân — a five-paneled robe worn during the Nguyễn dynasty (18th–20th century). The five panels symbolized parents, grandparents, and the wearer — a garment of family and filial piety. It was modest, formal, and deeply Confucian in spirit.
The 1930s Revolution: Le Mur's Modern Silhouette
In the 1930s, Saigon designer Nguyễn Cát Tường (known as Le Mur) reimagined the áo ngũ thân into the form-fitted, two-panel silhouette we recognize today. Influenced by French fashion, he created a garment that was simultaneously Vietnamese and modern — sparking controversy and admiration in equal measure. His design became the template for all contemporary áo dài.
Regional Styles & Their Meanings
- Huế-style (Central Vietnam) — More conservative, often in deep purples and pastels. Associated with imperial refinement and scholarly culture.
- Saigon-style (Southern Vietnam) — More colorful, relaxed, and vibrant. Reflects the South's cosmopolitan, free-spirited character.
- Northern/Hanoi-style — Elegant and restrained, often in silk with subtle embroidery. Carries a formal, dignified quality.
